What Goes on During a Dental Implant Consultation

You’ve decided to replace your missing teeth with dental implants, and you’re anxious to get the process going. You know you want these more permanent prosthetics, but when you call your dentist’s office, they tell you that you need to have a consultation first. What exactly happens at this appointment, and why is it important? Read on to find out!

Oral Examination

Before your dentist can tell you whether you are a viable candidate for implants, they need to inspect your mouth for any infections like gum disease. You must be in good oral health in order to qualify for implants because infections can cause complications or implant failure.

This oral examination also gives your dentist the chance to see the extent of your tooth loss and reveals how many teeth you need to replace.

X-Ray or CT Cone Beam Scan and Planning

As part of your implant consultation, imaging plays a vital role in determining your eligibility for this treatment. Your jawbone must have the requisite density to support implants; otherwise, they will likely not be successful.

Advanced imaging with a CT cone beam scanner allows your dentist to see more detail and oral structures than they would in a normal X-ray, helping them plan the placement procedure with more precision. As a result, you may experience fewer complications and have a quicker recovery.

Discussion of Your Needs and Goals

Going to a dental implant consultation doesn’t automatically mean you are required to get them. After the examination, your dentist will discuss your situation and go over treatment plans with multiple options, such as traditional bridges, dentures, and, of course, implants. It’s also a great time to ask any questions you may have about dental implants and the treatment process.

Scheduling Any Preliminary Work

If you don’t immediately qualify for dental implants, don’t get discouraged. Through various treatments, such as gum disease therapy, tooth extractions, or bone grafts, your dentist can get you in a better position for implants. Once you complete this preliminary treatment, you can revisit the idea of implants and possibly move forward with it.

Scheduling the Placement Procedure

If you’ve received the all-clear from your dentist, then you may wish to schedule your implant placement. Keep in mind that it is a surgical procedure, which means you’ll need a few days to rest from normal activities (i.e., you may need to take time off work). Your dentist can go through the details of the procedure and what to expect in the weeks and months to come.

Even though you may be excited to start on your journey toward a complete smile again, the consultation is essential. Knowing what goes on during this appointment can help you get the most out of your visit.
