Gum Disease Treatment – Odessa, TX
Completely Renew Oral Health After Gum Disease
Periodontal gum disease is one of the most common oral health conditions among US adults. It occurs when plaque and tartar buildup at the gum line irritates the soft tissue leading to bleeding, sores, and inflammation. This mild form of gum disease, gingivitis, is easily reversed with more frequent professional teeth cleanings, but left untreated, gum disease develops into the more advanced periodontitis which is the leading cause of tooth loss among adults over the age of 35. When this occurs, the Boyles General Dentistry team may recommend gum disease treatment at our office to restore oral health and prevent additional damage. Scaling & Root Planing
The most common treatment for periodontal disease is a combination of scaling and root planing. Scaling is the removal of plaque, tartar, and damaged gum tissue in order to promote healing and prevent the spread of gum disease. Root planing is the smoothing of tooth roots to prevent future buildup.
Soft Tissue Laser Dentistry
Typically, scaling and root planing is completed using a scalpel and stitches. However, this is not ideal since the healing tissue can lead to reinfection. We often recommend treatment with a cold laser. This unique type of soft tissue laser promotes healing and reduces bleeding and inflammation, so patients are less likely to experience recurrence of periodontal disease.
Antibiotic Therapy
In many cases, we recommend topical antibiotic therapy in addition to other gum disease treatments. Plaque and tartar buildup are caused by the waste produced by bacteria that live in the mouth. By removing bacteria from the affected area, patients’ risk for reinfection is reduced.
